Comics in books, films, televisions, toys, gears impacting entertainment, literature, education, fashion, technology, politics and economy is an all pervasive subject. Yet the critics believe that it is an underutilized art considering its tremendous potential to induce substantial influence and revolutionary changes in society. So far this stream has been optimally promoted in entertainment and toy industries contributing towards astronomical revenue figures by leveraging the adventure and action of the metropolis comics.
One of the arguments which has cropped up while analyzing the reasons of discrimination between comics and other forms of literature is its apparent simplicity and legibility. It is contended that a comic book mitigates the scope of human imagination because of its excess lucidity. It is believed that it spoon feeds the audience with too much pictorial exposition and detail which dilutes their power of visualization. However, this slur and reproach has not discouraged the avant-garde comic artists from creating futuristic fusion of art and literature to create something cogent and powerful that can introduce a new horizon and become an important medium of fostering awareness.
If we scout a comic book store we will come across variegated comic strips which are not only revolving around action and violence but highlights multitudinous aspects of our society. For instance the Archie series humorously brings out the relentless dilemmas of an infatuated teenager sandwiched between two crushes of his life thereby forging a love triangle with Veronica and Betty. Although, apparently the plot is hilarious and ordinary the predicaments of this character can be very easily identified by the modern teenagers. The chasm between the rich and the middle class is also successfully delineated by the equation between Archie Andrews and Veronica’s father who is a rich business tycoon known as Hiram Lodge. This theme demonstrates a sharp contrast from the epic struggles of the action heroes and portrays a completely different social perspective. Even mythology, fairy tale, political critiques are being narrated through graphical illustrations either creating humorous parodies or through inspirational stories and action adventures the comics can embrace every facet of human life without discrimination or intolerance.
